Microsoft Scam
What is it?
It is primarily tech support fraud, involving callers or pop-ups falsely claiming to be Microsoft. What they are trying to do is trick you into allowing remote access to your computer or into sending them money. They often use urgent virus warnings or fake subscription renewals. Key signs include unsolicited calls/emails/pop-ups with phone numbers, requests for payment via gift cards/wire transfers, demands to install unfamiliar remote access tools (ex. UltraViewer), or links to spoofed Microsoft domains.
Microsoft never sends unsolicited alerts with phone numbers to fix your computer. If you are receiving these alerts, Microsoft recommends reporting them via their official reporting page and to run antivirus scans if you have interacted with them.
What to do if targeted or scammed
• Hang up / close the pop-up
• Report the scam at www.microsoft.com/en-us/concern/scam
• Scan with an antivirus program
• Change Passwords
